Kemonito
Kemonito is one of the most significant icons of Lucha Libre Mexicana. Despite his immense popularity, he does not view himself as a part of the lucha universe but as a highly recognized mascot. With a career spanning over 40 years, Kemonito has endured countless blows, injuries, and surgeries yet remains an idol for fans of Pancracio. In my upcoming senior exhibition, Unraveled, I will showcase my Kemonito publication—a bilingual zine I created—as a critical piece in my La Lucha Creativa series. This series will include a diverse collection of works: a hand-painted sign, three meticulously crafted prints, and a vibrant oil pastel painting. The Kemonito zine, which I will print and hand-bind, will be featured on a floating shelf and presented altar-like to emphasize its cultural and personal significance.
As a Mexican American graphic designer, I developed an appreciation for the stories that shaped my community and my perspective on the world. This cultural richness is seamlessly woven into my design aesthetic, where fluency in English and Spanish allows me to bridge divides and connect with diverse audiences.
Artist Statement
I am Jose "Chepe" Lara Bañuelos, a Mexican American graphic designer who brings a unique perspective shaped by my experiences as the eldest first-generation child of Mexican immigrant parents. My upbringing has instilled a deep appreciation for the diverse stories that have shaped my identity and influenced my perceptions of the world. My cultural heritage is a constant inspiration, intricately woven into my design aesthetic. Fluency in English and Spanish has allowed me to bridge cultural divides and communicate effectively with diverse audiences. This linguistic ability enhances my capacity to understand different perspectives and design solutions that are both inclusive and accessible in our communities in Los Angeles.
Driven by a passion for visual communication, I specialize in creating dynamic and engaging designs that captivate viewers' attention. I approach each project as an opportunity to narrate a story, utilizing visual elements to evoke emotion and provoke thought. My work can be characterized by the continuous use of vibrant colors, intricate illustrations, and thoughtful layering compositions, all reflecting my commitment to pushing creative boundaries and exploring new possibilities. I find joy in the particular details of letterforms and the tactile nature of handmade elements, which allow me to explore innovative ways to express ideas. My dedication to craft enhances my visual output and enables me to connect with viewers more personally, creating designs that leave a lasting impression. I aim to foster connections that commemorate my culture and heritage by making each design a testament to the transformative power of creativity.
