626 Scene Maker

626 Scene Maker is a set of scrapbooking materials that attempt to document my subculture’s experience growing up in the southwestern San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles. an audience can place illustrated stickers on photos to create scenes of life in this place-based subculture. my aim is to juxtapose the deliberate, collage nature of internet identity with the negotiated hyperlocal identities we carry. the piece is presented as a hybrid of Flash Player “scene makers” and physical "happenings", drawing on my history with digital pop and contemporary fine art. the San Gabriel Valley i hoped to document with this project, the place that saved my life when i was a hyperlocal journalist, is no longer here. the same could be said about that journalist. this is a time of rapid change. i hope that, through creative use of this tool, you can imagine pasts, futures, and alternate presents for my home, subcultures, and me <3

Artist Statement

A kind of psychic “chimera-girl” tied by fate to los angeles, but destined for the deep sea. hoping to replace love worldwide with play and to destroy the life/play divide. first released for NTSC regions on 11/1/00 after a tragic end to a previous life. once developed a ritual of looking at a single cute image every day so as to have something to look forward to. now hoping to design explorative sandboxes with that high dynamic range of emotions, put-upon cuteness so immense and singular it gains a sense of abrasion and alienation. drawing on structures learned from noise and new music to explore the possibilities in that contrast of feelings
